I. So sánh hơn với tính từ / phó từ

1. Quy tắc chung

Có 2 nhóm:

a) Tính từ / phó từ ngắn (1 âm tiết)

→ Thêm -er

thick → thicker
cold → colder
quiet → quieter

Nếu tận cùng là một nguyên âm + phụ âm (w, x, y không tính) → gấp đôi phụ âm cuối:

big → bigger
red → redder
hot → hotter

Các tính từ 2 âm tiết mà kết thúc bằng các phụ âm sau thì áp dụng quy tắc đối với tính từ ngắn y, ow, er, et, le → + er:

• • happy → happier (đổi y thành i + er)
  • narrow → narrower
  • clever → cleverer
  • quiet → quieter
  • gentle → gentler (chỉ cần thêm r)

 

b) Tính từ / phó từ dài (2 âm tiết trở lên)

→ Dùng more hoặc less

more beautiful
more important
more believable

 

c) Một số trường hợp đặc biệt

• • Tính từ có đuôi -ed, -ful, -ing, -ish, -ous → dùng more

more useful
more boring
more cautious

• • friendly → friendlier hoặc more friendly

 

Lưu ý quan trọng

• • Đã dùng more thì không dùng -er
    Sai: more prettier, more faster

 

II. Cấu trúc so sánh hơn

1. Dạng cơ bản

S + V + adj/adv + er + than + noun/pronoun

S + V + more/less + adj/adv + than + noun/pronoun

Ví dụ:

John’s grades are higher than his sister’s.
Today is hotter than yesterday.
This chair is more comfortable than the other.
He speaks Spanish more fluently than I.
He visits his family less frequently than she does.
This year’s exhibit is less impressive than last year’s.

 

2. Nhấn mạnh so sánh

Có thể thêm much hoặc far trước cụm so sánh.

A watermelon is much sweeter than a lemon.
His car is far better than yours.
Henry’s watch is far more expensive than mine.
That movie was much more interesting than the one on TV.
She dances much more artistically than her predecessor.
He speaks English much more rapidly than he does Spanish.

 

3. Lưu ý về đại từ sau “than”

Sau than dùng đại từ chủ ngữ, không dùng dạng tân ngữ.

He speaks Spanish more fluently than I (do).
(Với văn nói, có thể dùng: than me)

 

III. So sánh hơn với danh từ

Danh từ cũng có thể dùng để diễn đạt so sánh hơn.

1. So sánh bằng với danh từ

S + V + as + many/much/little/few + noun + as + noun/pronoun

He earns as much money as his brother.
They have as few classes as we.
Before payday, I have as little money as my brother.

 

2. So sánh hơn với danh từ

S + V + more/fewer/less + noun + than + noun/pronoun

I have more books than she.
February has fewer days than March.
Their job allows them less freedom than ours does.

 

IV. So sánh với “else”

Khi so sánh một người/vật với tất cả những người/vật khác → thêm else.

He is smarter than anybody else in the class.

 

V. Lược bỏ trong mệnh đề so sánh

• • Có thể lược bỏ chủ ngữ nếu trùng

Their marriage was as stormy as had been expected.

• • Có thể lược bỏ tân ngữ sau động từ

She gets her meat from the same butcher as I go to.
