Cấu trúc

1. 1. Even if + S + V, S + V
      → Diễn tả giả định mạnh: “dù cho… thì vẫn…”

   2. S + V + even if + S + V

 

Ý nghĩa

• • Nhấn mạnh rằng kết quả không thay đổi, dù điều kiện có xảy ra hay không.

  • Mạnh hơn if.

  • Khác với even though (even though = sự thật; even if = giả định).

 

Ví dụ

Even if it rains, we will go out.

I will support you even if everyone disagrees.

Even if he apologizes, I won’t forgive him.

She will keep working even if she feels tired.

Even if I had more money, I wouldn’t buy that car.

 

Lưu ý

• • Không dùng để nói sự thật đã xảy ra → dùng even though.

  • Có thể dùng trong cả câu điều kiện loại 1, 2, 3.

 

II. Whether or not

Cấu trúc

1. 1. S + V + whether or not + S + V

   2. Whether or not + S + V, S + V

 

Ý nghĩa

• • Nghĩa là: “dù… hay không”

  • Nhấn mạnh rằng kết quả không phụ thuộc vào điều kiện đó.

 

Ví dụ

I don’t know whether or not he will come.

We will go whether or not it rains.

Whether or not you agree, we must make a decision.

She will attend the meeting whether or not she feels well.

I am going to apply whether or not I get encouragement.

 

Lưu ý

• • Không dùng “if or not” ❌

  • Có thể rút gọn:

    • I don’t know whether he will come or not.

  • Dùng trong mệnh đề danh từ hoặc câu độc lập đều được.

 

III. Regardless of

Cấu trúc

Regardless of + N / N phrase / V-ing, S + V

S + V + regardless of + N / V-ing

 

Ý nghĩa

• • Nghĩa là: bất kể, không quan tâm đến việc…

  • Nhấn mạnh rằng hành động/kết quả không bị ảnh hưởng bởi điều kiện đó.

  • Gần tương đương nghĩa với: despite, in spite of. Tuy nhiên có sự khác biệt nhỏ:

She kept working regardless of feeling tired (Dù có mệt hay không, cô ấy vẫn làm việc) – có thể cô ấy đang mệt hoặc không.

She kept working in spite of feeling tired (Dù có mệt, cô ấy vẫn làm việc) – cô ấy đang mệt.

 

Ví dụ

Regardless of the weather, we will go out.

We will go out regardless of the weather.

Regardless of what happens, I will support you.

He decided to apply regardless of his parents’ opinion.
