1. Cấu trúc: Would rather (1 chủ ngữ)

Would rather … (than) có nghĩa giống prefer … to (thích hơn) nhưng ngữ pháp khác.

• • Sau would rather là động từ nguyên thể không có to.

  • Khi so sánh hai vế: would rather + than, còn prefer + to.

Ví dụ:

We would rather die in freedom than live in slavery.
I would rather drink Coca than Pepsi.
I prefer drinking Coca to drinking Pepsi.
I prefer Coca to Pepsi.

 

a. Ở thì hiện tại / tương lai

Diễn tả mong muốn, lựa chọn ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai.

Cấu trúc:

S + would rather + V (nguyên thể)
Phủ định: S + would rather not + V

Ví dụ:

Jim would rather go to class tomorrow than today.
Jim would rather not go to class tomorrow.

 

b. Ở thì quá khứ

Diễn tả sự tiếc nuối hoặc mong muốn khác đi trong quá khứ.

Cấu trúc:

S + would rather + have + V3
Phủ định: S + would rather not have + V3

Ví dụ:

Jim would rather have gone to class yesterday than today.
Jim would rather not have gone to class yesterday.

Lưu ý:

Có thể dùng would thay thế cho used to khi nói về thói quen quá khứ, nhưng không áp dụng cho cấu trúc would rather.

 

2. Cấu trúc: Would rather (2 chủ ngữ)

Dùng khi người thứ nhất muốn người thứ hai làm (hoặc đã làm / không làm) điều gì đó.

 

a. Mong muốn ở hiện tại (trái với thực tế hiện tại)

Động từ sau chủ ngữ thứ hai chia ở thì quá khứ đơn.
To be → were cho tất cả các ngôi.

Cấu trúc:

S₁ + would rather (that) + S₂ + V (quá khứ đơn)

Ví dụ:

Henry would rather that his girlfriend worked in the same department as he does.
(His girlfriend does not work there.)

Jane would rather that it were winter now.
(It is not winter now.)

Phủ định:

S₁ + would rather (that) + S₂ + did not + V
hoặc were not

Henry would rather that his girlfriend didn’t work in the same department.
Jane would rather that it were not winter now.

 

b. Mong muốn trái với thực tế ở quá khứ

Động từ sau chủ ngữ thứ hai chia ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành.

Cấu trúc:

S₁ + would rather (that) + S₂ + had + V3

Ví dụ:

Bob would rather that Jill had gone to class yesterday.
(Jill did not go.)

Bill would rather that his wife hadn’t divorced him.

Lưu ý:

• • Có thể lược bỏ that.

  • Thường dùng wish thay cho would rather that khi diễn đạt mong muốn trái thực tế.
