I. Giống nhau prefer & would prefer

• • Đều mang nghĩa: thích hơn / muốn hơn

  • Đều dùng với:

    • N + to + N

    • V-ing + to + V-ing

    • to V (so sánh với rather than)

 

II. Khác nhau về nghĩa

 

Ví dụ:

I prefer tea to coffee.
(Tôi thích trà hơn cà phê – nói chung.)

I would prefer tea to coffee (right now).
(Tôi muốn uống trà hơn cà phê lúc này.

 

III. Dùng với 1 Chủ ngữ

1️⃣ Prefer / Would prefer + N + to + N

I prefer summer to winter.
I would prefer summer to winter.

 

2️⃣ Prefer / Would prefer + V-ing + to + V-ing

I prefer staying home to going out.
I would prefer staying home to going out.

 

3️⃣ Prefer / Would prefer + to V₁ (rather than V₁)

I prefer to walk rather than drive.
I would prefer to walk rather than drive.

 

4️⃣ Would prefer + to have +V3 (quá khứ)

Chỉ dùng với would prefer.

I would prefer to have gone earlier.
(Tôi muốn lẽ ra mình đã đi sớm hơn.)

 

IV. Dùng với 1 Chủ ngữ

1️⃣ Prefer / Would prefer + O + to V

I prefer you to stay here.
I would prefer you to stay here.

→ Mong muốn bình thường, không mang nghĩa trái thực tế.

 

2️⃣ Prefer / Would prefer + that + S + (should) + V_bare

I prefer that he (should) come early.
I would prefer that he (should) come early.

 

V. So sánh với Would rather

 

 

Ví dụ:

I would prefer you to stay home.
(Tôi muốn bạn ở nhà.)

I would rather you stayed home.
(Thực tế bạn không ở nhà.)
